BIBLEFamiliar Bible stories are expanded into a theme of "God's Gifts to Me" as students study how God gives gifts of the world, families, friends, leaders, salvation, the church, and a way to live. The Bible stories and everyday anecdotes were written by a gifted author. Students are provided with a variety of colorful, innovative materials from which they make booklets, mobiles, puzzles, flash cards, and more.
HISTORY
The course objectives include an appreciation of America as a great and beautiful country. They are introduced to famous places of historical interest and natural beauty. The students are given an introduction to American history from the Pilgrims to the Civil War. They are also exposed to map reading skills.
LANGUAGE
First grade has an intensive phonics program in which students practice phonetic combinations daily and learn to "sound out" words. Reading groups meet twice a day, and students have eight reading books which progress in difficulty. Students learn fundamentals of language, such as sentence structure, punctuation, spelling, prefixes, suffixes, contractions, and compound words. They are taught cursive penmanship.
MATH
Students learn to add up to 18 and subtract from 18 down. They "carry" in addition and do simple multiplication. First graders learn to tell time, count coins, and measure inches and centimeters. They count by 2's, 5's, 10's, 25's, 50's, and the learn fractions, 1/2's, 1/3's, and 1/4's.
SCIENCE
Students learn about their own uniqueness, the five senses, and simple propulsion found in air, wind, water, wheels, ramps, levers, and magnets. They discover animals, insects, plants, and view the changing panorama of the seasons.
