BIBLEStudents are presented with the truths about Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. It is our prayer and goal that each student makes a personal decision to embrace these truths in their own lives. Students are given the opportunity to grow spiritually and develop godly character. This is accomplished through Bible study, prayer, and Scripture memorization. Second graders study Biblical men and women who have followed God's plan and displayed godly character.
HISTORY
Students learn about the physical characteristics of our country, our freedoms, our flag, patriotic songs and holidays, and the lives of men and women who built our country. They will develop map skills. They will be encouraged to be loyal citizens. Students will be exposed to current events to help them be aware of what is happening to other people in our world today.
LANGUAGE
The Language Arts is divided into four areas: Phonics and Reading, Cursive Writing, Spelling and Poetry, and Language.
Phonics and Reading - Students review vowels, consonants, blends one and two vowel words, and consonant blends. They recognize and use all phonics special sounds in reading. They use spelling rules such as doubling consonants, dropping silent e, and changing i to y. They participate in oral reading.
Cursive Writing - Students review cursive letter formation. They use cursive writing in guided creative writing, creative writing journals, and in daily seatwork in all academic areas. Three-fourths (3/4) space writing is introduced.
Spelling and Poetry - The class has a weekly phonics-based word list. Vocabulary words and definitions are included in this list the second semester. There is a weekly spelling test. Students learn how to use a glossary, and they commit several poems to memory.
Language - Students focus on capitalization rules, correct punctuation, and complete sentences, questions, and exclamations. They learn how to use suffixes, prefixes, abbreviations, compound words, rhyming words, opposite words, same-meaning words, and plural words, singular, possessive words, and contractions. The curriculum includes alphabetizing words, dictionary skills, word usage rules, creative writing, writing letters and thank-you notes, and writing short stories.
MATH
Second Graders develop their number recognition, counting, and writing skills with with numbers 1 - 1,000. The course helps them understand the concept of greatest and least on numbers 1 -1,000. They learn to count by threes to 36 and by fours to 48. Second graders master addition facts through 18, column addition, and four-digit addition with carrying along the subtraction facts though 18, and four-digit subtraction with borrowing. They learn the multiplication facts 0 - 5 and division facts 1 - 5. Students do story problems and multiple combinations. The learn to estimate, count and combine coins and bills. They tell time to the nearest minute. They use the English and metric measures, and they draw and measure lines to one-half inch. Second graders develop their listening skills through oral combinations and story problems. They learn about calendars, place value to ten thousands, unit fractions, reading a thermometer, and they learn how to read pictographs, bar graphs, and line graphs.
SCIENCE
Students learn about human biology, different plants and animals, earth and space, matter, and energy. Students also learn conservation of God's creation.
