Fifth Grade Curriculum Information.

BIBLE
Students will survey the Old Testament, gaining an in-depth study of the lives of various Bible characters, and learning choices (whether good or bad) made by these characters which serve as examples for students as they make their own choices.
HISTORY
Students focus on the history and geography of the United States. Topics studied include the land and people before Columbus up to the Westward expansion. The also see the connection between the past and the present.
LANGUAGE
Reading and Literature: Students participate in oral reading, reading comprehension exercises, and vocabulary building.

Penmanship: Students review cursive writing formation through skill practice, work exercises, original composition, and sentence dictation.

Spelling and Poetry: Students learn and memorize weekly word lists on various categories and vocabulary study along with four peoms.

Writing Process: Students develop proper writing skills learning about sentences and sentences parts; punctuation, capitalization, and quotation facts; synonyms, antonyms, and homonyms; dictionary and thesaurus skills; various kinds of letters; making an outline; writing book reports and a library research report; creative writing.

Grammar: Students recognize and diagram all eight parts of speech and complements. They practice recognizing proper word usage.
MATH
Students will review and learn the following terms, facts, and concepts: place value; fundamental operations; story problems; roman numerals; rounding off; English and metric measures; converting measures; factoring; divisibility rules; fractions; decimals; reading a thermometer; Celsius and Fahrenheit scales; equation solving; graph and scale drawings; basic geometric shapes; perimeter and area. Through this study, students will find exactness, preciseness, and completeness in the subject matter of mathematics created by a rational, orderly God.
SCIENCE
Students will realized that studying science is really studying the works of God. They will study the following concepts: animals - mammals and vertebrates; energy - force and motion, electricity and magnetism, engines, light; matter - water, air, weather; earth and space - geology, oceanography, astronomy, and conservation.
