KCS Online offers all courses students need in grades 7 through 12. In addition to normal courses that all schools have, KCS Online has Bible, Dual-Credit (classes that count for high school and college), and AP courses. 2. How do KCS Online courses work? KCS Online courses are asynchronous meaning there are no live meeting times during which all students and their teacher must be online together. Students read lessons, watch short educational video clips, do research, work on and submit assignments, participate in group projects, and contribute to class discussion threads at times that are convenient for them. Meeting due dates and corresponding with teachers will help students stay on track, and allow them to receive the feedback necessary to stay engaged and learning. 3. How long do classes last? Students have one year to complete all courses; however, most classes can be completed in a much shorter time. The pace is entirely up to the student. In terms of hours per day, course length will vary. KCS Online courses should not last more than 45 minutes per day, per class, for the average student. If a student is taking all their classes from KCS Online, they will usually work 3 to 4 hours a day. However, the beauty of online learning is that most students and families often do enriching activities beyond what is required by the course. That is, learning should also take place outside the course. KCS Online encourages students to pursue their interests and God-given abilities. This might mean going to a local store as students study economics or cooking with an international recipe when they are studying a country of interest. After trying a course, most students realize that they have plenty of time for other things in life. 4. Does KCS Online provide textbooks? All KCS Online materials are web-based, except for certain books that can be borrowed from the library or purchased online. Courses that may require the purchase of an additional textbook are typically AP, English and Dual-Credit courses. 5. Can parents/students pick the classes they want or must they choose at a certain grade level? KCS partners with families to meet their needs; therefore, a student requiring a course at a higher or lower level will not be a problem. There is no extra charge for this. KCS Online wants to keep students challenged, engaged, and growing. 6. How much contact will I have with a teacher? Teachers must respond to student questions within 24 hours (Monday-Friday). When teachers contact students, students are expected to respond within a similar time. Students can contact the teachers as necessary, even if it exceeds the basic communication requirements. Parents may also feel free to contact teachers. Teachers may, in rare cases, establish communication time or volume limits. 7. Are KCS Online courses accredited? KCS Online courses are accredited under the overall KCS accreditation through the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and Association of Christian Schools International. 8. What Internet speeds are needed to for KCS Online courses? High-speed Internet access is preferred. If families have the option, a cable connection is the best high-speed choice, followed by DSL and satellite connections. KCS Online will function with a dial-up connection; however, it is not a recommended option due to its slow speed. Our online courses involve watching videos and downloading files, which will be much more difficult with a dial-up connection. 9. How do I access the videos within a course? QuickTime must be installed to access course videos. Quicktime is available as a free download at www.quicktime.com. 10. Why do I have a problem logging in? If you are sent back to the login page after trying to start a course lesson, the problem is likely related to the cookie setting in your web browser. You will need to adjust the web browser to always permit session cookies. The following directions may help you correct the cookie settings within Internet Explorer (IE). 1. Open your IE browser and choose "Tools" from the pull down menu. 2. Select "Internet Options" and choose the "Privacy" tab. 3. Click on the "Advanced" button. 4. Check "Override automatic cookie handling" and "Always allow session cookies." (Note: Users can choose to Accept, Block, or Prompt for first-party cookies or third-party cookies.) If this does not solve the problem, please contact the KCS Online program coordinator. 11. What should I do if I forgot/lost my username and password? Contact our Registrar/Online Program Coordinator, Leslie Reynolds at lreynolds@kcsnet.com. 12. What other school activities can I attend as an online student? KCS Online students are encouraged to attend our weekly chapel service in addition to all athletic and performing arts events, unless they are taking online courses as a result of disciplinary action disallowing them to attend on campus.
